Successful salmon fishing takes more than patience and technique, it takes the right attractants, baits and jigs as well. Attractants will help lure fish near your line as the water borne scents flow through the fishes nostrils, the right bait will make the salmon bite, and jigs will imitate a bait fish and fuel the salmons fish brain into attack mode. All good fishermen voyaging for salmon should be stocked with the most effective attractants, baits and jigs.
Salmon attractants
One of the most used attractants among fishermen is herring oil, probably because salmon will eat herring and are therefore attracted to their scent. WD-40 has been used for decades as an attractant to catch salmon as it will mask smells, specifically those of human and tobacco products which salmon tend to stay away from. Many attractants on the market include garlic as one of their ingredients, although this is not part of a salmons normal diet they seem to be interested in the scent.
Salmon baits
The most popular bait used to catch salmon are strips of fish, typically those of smelt or herring as the smell attracts them. Spoons are also prevalent bait used for salmon fishing. Spoons are basically lures that look like fish that mimic the movement of the swimming motion of that fish when it is being dragged behind a moving boat. Sand shrimp and salmon eggs are other commonly used baits.
Salmon jigs
If you put a herring, anchovies, shrimp, smelt, or krill jig in front of a hungry salmon, chances are it will snap at it! For jigs to work, you must learn the technique known as jigging to make the jig appear as if it is in motion like a swimming fish. Moving the rod up and down, swaying gently side to side, and reeling in the jig slowly are all jigging techniques. If you really the jig close to the surface and then drop it low again it may appear as an injured fish, giving salmon more reason to snap at it.
